AEO vs SEO
What changes when the answer replaces the results page.
AEO is not a replacement for SEO and it is not a rebrand of it. It shares the foundations and then optimises for a different outcome: being the source that gets quoted, rather than the link that gets clicked.
What stays the same#
- Crawlability. A page nothing can read cannot be ranked or quoted.
- Authority. Both systems trust sources that other sources reference.
- Genuine usefulness. Thin content fails at both, for the same reason.
- Speed and mobile. Still table stakes.
What changes#
| Classic SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| The unit | A ranking position | A citation in an answer |
| The query | Short keywords | Full questions, conversationally phrased |
| What wins | The page that best matches the query | The passage that best answers it |
| Structure | Helps readers and skimmers | Decides whether you can be extracted at all |
| Result shape | Ten links, you want one | One answer, naming two or three sources |
| Measurement | Impressions, clicks, position | Named or not, and who was named instead |
| Time to move | Weeks to months | Similar, and less predictable |
What it means for how you write#
- 1Answer in the first screen. An engine lifting a passage will not read to paragraph nine to find it.
- 2Write headings as questions. They are what a retrieval system matches against.
- 3Make passages self-contained. A sentence that only makes sense after the previous three cannot be quoted.
- 4Attribute your claims. Sourced statements are safer for an engine to repeat, so they get repeated.
- 5Be specific. Numbers, constraints and named examples are what make one source more quotable than another.
- 6Say where it does not apply. Stated limits read as credible, and credibility is what gets cited.
The overlap is the point
Everything in that list also makes the page better for a human reader and for Google. There is no version of this where you optimise for assistants at the cost of everything else — which is exactly why it is worth doing now.
